Given the pandemic… not a surprise but still too bad: I’d give a lot for a thoughtfully written, well-produced and acted show right now. :s Despite my reservations I would totally have given a second season a shot.

Another day, another renewal rescinded.

Showtime has cancelled the Kirsten Dunst-led comedy On Becoming a God in Central Florida, despite renewing it for Season 2 last September. The pay cabler confirmed to our sister site Deadline that the cancellation came as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which delayed production on its sophomore run. https://tvline.com/2020/10/08/on-becoming-a-god-in-central-florida-cancelled-season-2-showtime/

There are a LOT of elements at play here, and the tone has shifted throughout. I keep thinking: is this really a sort of capitalist horror show? I’d be totally down with that, but they’re juggling just a few too many pieces right now. Still withholding judgment till end of season (haven’t seen last ep yet). Whether the last episode is so awesome I decide to continue or not, I feel like they need to focus. Some elements are allegorically heavy-handed, to say the least; some are subtle and smart, and not like other shows I’ve seen… which is why I keep wanting to stick with it.

I mentioned this on PtP sorry to repeat but it keeps sticking with me… fwiw, I’ve never seen the detail of someone re-lighting half-smoked cigarettes on TV. That tells us everything we need to know about Krystal’s socioeconomic status, more than all the set-dressing and costuming and make-up in the world – it’s just a terrific detail. Théodore Pellerin continues to go a great job with a difficult character – needy, pathetic, unlikeable, but there’s still someone home (unlike Obie). And I continue to think this show wants to discuss something that’s pretty important: the tyranny of money and work; cult/pyramid schemes (and by extension, many late-capitalist business models), how destructive all that is. It’s a lot. Maybe too much. But I admire the show for trying.

Maybe it is more that I really can’t believe anyone would get so engulfed in a pyramid scheme let alone much of a town. But they keep happening because some people want to con and some people are easily conned.

Or perhaps it is because the heroine of the story is essentially a criminal with some sort of morally redemptive trait. Dexter and Breaking Bad were similarly hard turn-offs for me because of that.

Kirsten Dunst smoking and cursing is kinda funny at times.

I failed to understand the title, despite being captivated by it. The pace is quite slow through those first two episodes. Have downloaded but have not watched ep 3; not feeling the desire for it. I did enjoy repo lady saying she needed the braces off her teeth. Is that high praise for a show set in Florida? The banner for the show is very nice.
